The Hoke County Health Center was first established on April 6, 1925. Its location was the Raeford Court House. On January 12, 1931, Dr. R.L. Murray was elected as Health Officer and the only public health service was communicable disease and animal control. The old site at 429 East Central Avenue was dedicated on Sunday, May 19, 1957 with Dr. J.W. Wilcox as the Health Officer. The Hoke County Health Department has been providing Hoke County’ residents with a variety of public health care programs and services for their health care needs since 1950.
Early 2004, the Hoke County Board of Commissioners and the Hoke County Board of Health were instrumental in securing resources needed for the new health center. Funding for construction was provided by the United States Department of Agriculture Rural Development. The ground breaking ceremony for the new site was held on Thursday, August 26, 2004. In the Spring of 2005, the construction began on the new health center. This beautiful 19,535 square foot building was designed and built to provide health care services to individuals, families and disseminate health education services throughout the community. Our new location at 683 East Palmer Road is just outside of the primary business district of downtown Raeford. The doors of this beautiful facility, was opened for business on Monday, February 6, 2006.
The mission of the Hoke County Health Center is to provide comprehensive public health services that focus on access to preventive health care and community health education outreach. These services are designed to improve quality of life through encouraging health and well-being in an effort to prevent premature death and disability among our citizens who live and work in our community. Our services have broadened throughout the years. However, one thing has remained the same; our staffs’ dedication, service and commitment to provide our citizens with the best possible care.
The Hoke County Health Center’s staff consists of about 30-40 employees who work with local, regional and state health care professionals to provide an array of services annually.
