1. Can I prepay my taxes before the bills are mailed?

Yes, prepayment amounts would be based on the previous year’s tax value and tax rates and would be subject to settlement when the value, rates, and bill are finalized.

3. I sold this property. Why am I getting this tax bill?

North Carolina law states that all taxable real property shall be listed and billed in the name of the owner as of January 1 each year. For additional information, please contact our office at 910-875-8751.

4. I am in the military, do I have to pay this bill?

Taxpayers who are active military and have a home of record as stated on the most current LES is a state other than North Carolina are not required to pay personal property taxes in North Carolina. To process a release for the bill, the Tax Department will need a copy of a current LES. Spouses and dependents are exempt also if they have the documents needed such as a marriage certificate and/or a sponsor card to link the two names together. 5. I do not live in Hoke County and never have. Why am I receiving a bill?

Motor Vehicle tax bills are created based on information provided by the Division of Motor Vehicles to the County. If you did not live in Hoke County when the vehicle registration was initiated or renewed, a, “Change of County” form will need to be completed. Contact us and we will provide the necessary document.

6. Why is there a BLOCK on my tag, preventing renewal?

A BLOCK is placed on a tag when the bill becomes 4 months past due. The BLOCK can only be removed when the bill is paid in full or a Les is provided.

7. We do not own this vehicle anymore or/ We do not live in this state anymore. What should I do with the bill?

If the tag was transferred from the sold vehicle to another vehicle, the bill is due in full. If the tag has been submitted to the Department of Motor Vehicle License Plate Agency, the Tax Department needs to be notified along with a copy of a tag turn in receipt within 1 year and the bill may be prorated.

8. Can I appeal the value of my vehicle?

Vehicles are valued as of January 1 of the year in which the bill is due. Taxpayers may appeal the value within 30 days of the billing date and after the bill has been paid. Consideration for excess mileage, excess wear and tear, accident damage, etc will be given based upon proof provided by the owner and a inspection of the vehicle provided by the tax office.

9. What time period does a motor vehicle bill cover?

The tax year for a registered motor vehicle is the 12 months following a new registration or the expiration of an existing registration.

10. When are real estate taxes due?

The due date is September 1. A 2% discount is allowed on Taxes if paid by August 31. Discount does not apply to the Solid Waste fee. Taxpayers have until January 5 to pay without a penalty. Taxes are past due January 6th and interest is assessed at 2% on this date. 3/4 of 1% interest is added the 1st day of each month until paid in full.
